HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH

Covenant Presbyterian Church began as a dream on the part of people to organize another Presbyterian church in Reno. The project was established by the Presbytery of Nevada in the summer of 1986. A task group was formed to develop a mission statement, call a pastor and find a site on which to locate a congregation.

By July 1987, the task group asked The Rev. Dr. Donald H. Frank of Caldwell, Idaho to become the organizing mission pastor. On September 13, 1987, 157 persons gathered for the first worship service held in the Washoe Masonic Lodge on Peckham Lane. Through a democratic process, the name Covenant Presbyterian Church was selected, reflecting the biblical covenant God has had with his people. On April 16, 1988, the Presbytery of Nevada met at St. John's Presbyterian Church and with 155 names officially formed the congregation into a church installing Dr. Frank as its first pastor and twelve elders and deacons as the church's two official boards.

In January 1991, a 3.4 acre site was selected in the Northwest Reno area on the corner of Mae Anne and Avenida de Landa. The Presbytery agreed to purchase the property for $226,000. With permits secured, a zone change made, and a building plan, the church moved along to build a 9,000 square foot building that contains a sanctuary/social hall, a suite of offices, a kitchen, and six classrooms plus restrooms. On November 21, 1993, the congregation held it’s first worship service in the new building. The congregation has grown to 284 members.

On December 31, 1996, the Rev. Don Frank retired and Covenant has begun a new journey of rediscovery. In August, 1997 the church asked the Rev. David Hicks to come as the Interim Pastor as we continued our journey and searched for the pastor God has called to serve with us.

In July 1998, we found that Pastor, and on August 31, 1998, the Rev. Jay Hull and his family joined us at Covenant Presbyterian Church. To discover the history from this point forward, we invite you to look to the present and the future. Come see us as it unfolds.
